Three a Day Workouts

I'm accustomed to doing 2 a day workouts on a fairly frequent basis.  But yesterday I did 3 workouts.  It's not the first time ever or anything, but it's a pretty rare occurrence.

I'm pretty sure this is exactly what it looked like outside my house on Tues and Wed am.
On Tuesday, I had a track workout planned for the morning.  My alarm was set for 4:30 am.  At about 4:15 am, I woke up to the sound of thunder, lightening and pouring rain.  Now, I will run in the rain, but I won't run when it's lightening...no way Jose.  So I knew there was no chance I was going to get my run in.  So, I did something I rarely do.  I reset the alarm, rolled over and went back to sleep.  I figured I would just get my run in after work.  But after work I went to Whole Foods, and by the time I got home and got the groceries unpacked I was hungry and tired.  I took a bonus day off Tuesday.  So be it.

On Wednesday am...same story.  Alarm set for 4:30 am, woke up about 4:15 to thunder, lightening and rain - AGAIN.  Ok, this was getting ridiculous.  So I decided I had to get up and do something that morning...no sleeping in again.  I got up and did a 45 minute full body workout.  Then on my lunch break I thought I'd try to make up some miles and went out for a 3 mile run.  And then last night I decided I needed to make up the track workout I missed so I went to the track for a HOT, HOT workout.  It was 91 degrees with humidity through the roof.  It was pretty miserable.  I had planned to do a total of 5 miles with warm-up and cool down, but only managed 4 1/2.

Three workouts today Mom??  Seriously, this is getting ridiculous. We have better things to do like eat treats.
By the time I got home last night I was totally dead on my feet.  The plus side is that I slept like a rock!  Luckily when I got up this morning there was no rain or lightening in site and I got in my Thursday run.  Although it was a slow, slow one this morning.  I was definitely feeling Wednesday's workouts.  There are pretty much a chance of thunderstorms in the forecast for the next week.  I have an 18 mile run planned for Saturday.  Fingers crossed the weather cooperates or I'll be headed to a gym somewhere to run on the track or treadmill and well that just sounds dreadful!  I certainly can't skip that one.

Do you ever try to "make up" missed workouts?  Do you sometimes regret it later or are you glad you did?

  1. I am so OCD about my training plan that it claws at my brain if I miss a workout and don't work it back in somewhere. I have heard though from several coach -types that if you miss one, you just need to let it go and move on - don't try to fit it in somewhere else. Who knows which is right...

  2. In my earlier years of racing I would make up missed workouts. Now, I have learned that if I missed one, just let it go and move one.

  3. I'm okay with missing one workout, I feel guilty about missing a second and by the third I've found a way to accommodate! Fingers crossed that lightning will hold off & if it rains it's a nice refreshing drizzle near the end !

  4. One day I'm going to get around to morning workouts.

3 workouts in one day is serious business. Congrats on getting that done!

  5. As a rule I never try to make up missed workouts but rather continue with my plan normally. I take it as extra rest and that is that. My body loves me for it :)

  6. depends on the workout I missed, but I do generally feel better if i make some sort of attempt to make up for it. it does feel good to sleep in sometimes though doesn't it.

  7. Nice job getting three workouts in during one day! Inept that was a good night sleep. I'm with you on not running in lightning. When I get caught in lightning I cringe every time I hear loud thunder.

Hope you get to do your 18 miler outside. 18 on the dreadmill would be brutal but a great mental toughness workout.

  8. I cannot imagine 18 miles on the treadmill. Hope you get the weather you need. I am a little OCD about making up planned workouts. I am working on realizing it's okay not to and have actually missed a couple I didn't make up.

  9. Awesome threesome (lol). I hope you have good weather for your 18! I have a bad habit of stacking workouts so I can be lazy on another day. It is awesome to sleep so well at the end of the day, though! :)

  10. Ugh, I put skipped my Monday AND Tuesday workout. Thus, I did two runs yesterday, a 5 mile run in the morning and a 4 mile speed workout in the evening. First time I have done that. often will strength train and run in the same day but not run twice. I'm sore today. I thought I could run today as scheduled but I think I need to take the advice of others and let it go and move on. Good for you on getting your workouts in! BTW: You are already up to 18 miles for your long run?

  11. I had to skip my Thursday run too (vomiting will make you want to do that) and felt guilty all day but I didn't try to make it up. Well done on getting it done.
    Cute photo of Jack!

  12. I'll make up missed workouts to a point, but it does depend. If I think I'm going to exhaust myself so much it will cost me other workouts, I don't. Sometimes, it becomes a priority thing and I have to decide which workout is the most important and what I can let go - not always the missed one.

I draw the line at thunderstorms too. Particularly since we've been getting hail in a lot of our thunderstorms lately.

  13. Those 3 a days are serious business. They're what kinda did me in throughout. I would be all invigorated after it was over and then a day later, I was exhausted.

Like the Jack pic. That's adorable.

  14. I used to try to make up missed workouts, but what I found was that it didn't really help me. It seemed to work better for me if I just moved forward.

    Love that picture of Jack!

  15. Lightning is definitely a no go. I don't usually try to make up a workout. There are just not enough hours in the day.
