Running on Empty - Sick

Well in typical Michael fashion - I'm SICK!!  Head cold.  My nose will not stop running, sore throat, headache, sneezing and lymph nodes the size of walnuts.

I worked from home for about 4 hours, but spent most of the day in bed today.  It seems like everytime I have something major coming up - like a half marathon on Sunday - I get sick.

I guess I should have expected it - between training, a crazy work schedule, and travel - I've been stretching myself pretty thin and now my body is screaming for rest.  I ran on Monday morning and could barely make it 2 miles - I thought I was still tired from my 11 miler on Saturday - but now I know I was getting sick.  I skipped my run this morning, and at this point I know I won't feel like running tomorrow.   I am in my taper week, but I don't want to go into a half marathon having only ran 2 miles the previous 7 days.  I don't know what to do....push myself and run tomorrow or take another rest day and run a few miles on Friday?

What would you guys do?  I need advice.

  1. I say rest tomorrow and try for Friday. You don't want to feel even worse. I hope you feel better soon :(

  5. Don't push it. Rest and feel better. Running now will only set you back. It will not improve your fitness. As "they" say "when in doubt, leave it out."

  8. If you don't rest I will get in a plane, fly to KC, and stand in front of you so you do not run. Seriously, you don't need to run for the rest of the week. Seriously. I didn't run for 3 weeks before my race last Feb and did just fine.

  9. So sorry to hear that you are sick! Rest!!! Make the call the day before. If you feel up to it.. Take it easy. Doesn't have to be your "A" race. But definitely don't push it. There's lots of races to be run in the future.

  11. Sorry your sick. I have always heard, if its all above your neck its ok to train, if its below your neck, then rest. So if you want an super easy run or walk, it wont effect you

  12. I vote for resting. You might surprise yourself how well you do even though you haven't run in a few days. All the training you put in is not going to go away that quickly. Hope you feel better soon!

  14. Definitely rest. You're in taper and you're training is done so don't worry about missing a few miles. Get the body healthy and it'll remember what to do at race time.

  19. OH NO!! Definitely rest then see how you feel on Friday or Saturday. Since it's a taper week anyway, your low miles shouldn't be too big of a deal.

  20. When in doubt, rest. Sort of like my race motto of go out slow and finish even slower. :) Even though it's so hard to do, listen to your body and rest!!

  21. MICHAEL!! I've got a great idea! I can't run either because of my stupid ankle so I'll rent a few Red Box movies, drive to MO (with chicken soup) and come hang out on the other side of the living room.

I'll hop on one leg to go get you refreshments!

Get better! I went swimming today at the pool for the first time in a week or two. I have no swimming buddies. Too bad we're states away!
