Starting the Year Off on a Not so Positive Note

Like most of you, the New Year rolls around and you have plans, big plans.  You want to get faster, lose weight, do more races, etc.  That was my goal.  Start 2013 out strong and go strong all year.

Well, sometimes, no matter what the plan your body/life has other plans.

My first few days of the year were fine, but for the last 10 days I've been fighting a sinus infection and bronchitis.  It knocked me out pretty good.  And I missed 7 solid days of working out.  I haven't done that in I don't know how long.  Finally on Saturday, while still not feeling 100% I decided to get on the treadmill and do something - even if it was just walk a couple of miles.  I felt sluggish, but ended up run/walking 5 miles.  I got in a good sweat and started to feel normal again.  I was able to do another 4 miles the next day and then 2 and a half yesterday.

I'm definitely feeling better, but still not at 100%.  But you can't use sickness as an excuse forever so I'm moving forward like I always do.  Tonight I have cycle class.  This class is SO HARD!  It's a hard core class for cyclists.  There are about 75 people in the class and only about 8 females.  It's not a spin class, it's truly a cycling class as everyone has their own bikes and trainers.  It runs 1:45 minutes to 2 hours, twice a week.  It's tough.  It's gonna kick my butt, especially since I missed all last week.  Oh well, frankly I need a little butt kicking.

So, I'll be biking and running this week.....now I've just got to make myself get back in that pool!

I will be traveling for work all of next week and part of the following week.....so that is going to further complicate me trying to get into a good routine again, especially swimming, but I'm going to do my best.

Hope every one's New Year is starting out a bit better than mine.  But if it's not, it's ok.  Pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and get going!!!

On a separate note, the Walt Disney World Marathon was this past weekend.....brings back so many memories from last year.  Congrats to all of you who might have ran it!  It helps remind me I'm capable of great things, even if the year didn't start off so hot!

  1. I'm sure the year will just get better and better. Not long and you won't remember it started off not so good. That cycling class sounds really hard.

  2. What a crummy and frustrating way to start the year! But, it's out of your control ;) Happy to hear you felt good enough to get some runs in.

And wow. 1:45-2:00 hours?! That class sounds INTENSE! Have fun!!! :)

  3. Oh bummer! Bronchitis is the worst. It really does knock you out for awhile. I hope you are back in action soon...and that cycling class sounds awful. In a good way. :)

  4. At least you're feeling better now. This is the time of year to get sick though, almost as if you have to set it aside on your calendar!

Don't forget to pick me up some hotel soap ;)

  5. At least you have picked yourself up and got back at it!! Some people would have stayed down!! The cycling class sounds awesome!! I'm So jealous you have something like that!! I'm having a hard time getting back in the pool too and I haven't been sick!! You're doing a great job dusting yourself off and moving!! Way to stay positive!!

  6. I am so so sorry to hear you have been sick and could not agree more with the "pick yourself up from where your at" theory. New years goals & resolutions are great but every single day is a new day and a new opportunity to start over. :)

Good luck with the cycling class...I wouldn't last 3 seconds. Holy crap it sounds worse than running a marathon!

  10. Great job on the bike class! I did 30 minutes indoor last night. My heart rate never got out of recovery zone, but it felt SO much harder than running. me=inefficient on a bike.

    Get well soon!

  11. So you all bring bikes and trainers for the class? That sounds like a pain but it sounds like the class is a great one so worth it.
Feel better! And GET IN THAT POOL!

  12. Maybe a tough beginning means it's all good from here, or that it will get better and better and better! I hope the bike class was good.

  14. This time of year is tough, I had 7 out of my 15 students absent on monday. I view January as the rest month anyways as we're all coming down from holidays and business. You'll kick some butt this year I know it!

  15. Good to hear your starting to feel better and back into training

As much as those cycling cycles will suck, they will pay huge dividends when the season comes around
