2013 Goals and Tenative Race Calendar

Last year, for the first time, I put goals on paper for 2012.  I have to say they helped me stay motivated because I wanted to be able to say I achieved them.  I had 8 goals and achieved 7.  I was pretty satisfied with that.  If you missed my recap you can read it here.  So I wanted to do the same thing again.  I want these to be stretch goals, not something I know that I can do, but something I know I'll have to push myself to do.  I'm not so sure I have some of these in me....time will tell.  So I've given these some serious thought and here goes:

2013 Goals

1.  Log 1000 running miles.
2.  Complete 2nd marathon and set a 15 minute PR.
3.  Run a 5K with a pace in the 9s.
4.  Shave 3 minutes of my half marathon PR (2:20)
5.  Get to my goal weight by April and stay there through year-end.
6.  Swim 52 miles
7.  Bike 1900 miles

So that's it.  All mileage would be an increase from 2012...and swimming is almost a 100% increase, but I put that there to keep me swimming even outside of tri season.  It's kind of the same for biking, the mileage is only about 100 more miles, but I won't be training for a Half Ironman this year, so my miles won't be that high over the summer, but I want to keep cycling even in the Winter months (probably on the trainer)

Here's my Tentative Race Schedule for 2013

Jan - ??
Feb - Lost Dutchman Half Marathon, Apache Junction, Arizona
March - Tatur 3 hour Snake Run (Trail Run)

April - Rock the Parkway Half Marathon, Kansas City, MO
May - Indianapolis Mini Marathon, Indy, IN

June - Hospital Hill Half Marathon, Kansas City, MO; Topeka Tinman Triathlon, Topeka, KS
July - WIN for KC Triathlon, Smithville, MO

Aug - ??
September - Hyvee 5150 Triathlon, Des Moines, IA

Oct - Chicago Marathon

Nov - ??
Dec ??
I'm sure more will be added to the list. But that's where it stands right now.  How about you?  What races are you planning for 2013.  Any new distances?

  1. Ooo! Great list! I would love to up my biking amount! So far I have a 5K, 20K and HM on the books for 2013. I will probably be in KC in June for the Half Iron man, too (relay team). How close are you to KC? I am there a lot - my in-laws and sis live there.

Hopefully I get to meet you when you do Chicago (or sometime in KC)!

  7. Awesome list!!! I ran the Chicago marathon last year (2012) - OMG it is soooo awesome! You will definately PR there - it is so flat except at the very end "Mount Roosevelt". Good luck!

I will be attempting my first (and only) Ironman - 140.6 miles in Panama City Beach, FL...can't wait!

  8. You had a great 2012!! I'm hoping to do my first 70.3 this year since I chickened out last year! If you get a chance to come to Louisville, Ky for the Derby Half Marathon on April 27 it is totally flat and you could PR for sure. Best of Luck in 2013!!

  10. These are fantastic goals Michael and I do not have a doubt in my mind that you will acheive and exceed the goals you have set for yourself.

Now about the race schedule I think you need to fill one of those empty months with something in Utah. :) Or maybe you and Jim could come to ID in August and do the Pocetello marathon/half marathon. If I remember correctly he has not crossed ID off of his list yet. I really need to meet you both in 2013! I am obviously not a stalker at all....

  11. Chicago! Woot! Maybe I can meet you then!

I have a list of my hotel experiences that I sent to Detroit Jeff about Chicago if you want it.

Also just know that the date is not the first Sunday in October but the second one and the price went up to $175.

    Great list!

  13. You're as bad a Jim with your race schedule all planned out. I'm just going to go with the flow and see what happens. I'll be doing one race definitely (10k at the Gold Coast in July) but the rest???

  15. My goals are more of the same. The triathlon is so new I still need to concentrate on that. And get that century ride in.
I am so sure you are remarkable that I read your swim goal and briefly thought you were going to swim 52 miles at one time! I had faith in you!

  16. Great goals! You forgot number 8 though, dance party before every race. Maybe that's too easy so half of those should involve random strangers at the start line :-)

  17. Nice goals! That is awesome you are doing the Chicago Marathon, if I did a big city race I would love to do that one. Hope you have a great 2013!

  20. Great goals! 15 minutes off your marathon time is awesome!! As is the half marathon time goal.

I also love the way you worded your weight loss goal - get there and stay there. I need to remember that.

Happy New Year!! Cheers to a fabulous 2013!

  21. Great goals! You've got it in you!

I am not doing any new distances this year, but I've got big plans for improving those I've already done.

  22. Great goals! I haven't done Chicago yet, but I've heard it's very well run, etc.

I've only got 2 races on my schedule so far, but no new distances for now. A Feb half on the ocean in NH, then a Spring marathon on the ocean in Maine.

    Let the training fun begin!!!!

  23. Back in Nov I was going to get to a certain weight (not end goal but lower than I am) and not let it get over that number ever again! And then I failed over the holidays... LOL. Here's to your Jan-Apr being MUCH more successful!
